Best MLB Run Line ATS Pick: Braves -1.5 at -130

Truist Park sets the stage for Sunday Night Baseball as the Atlanta Braves face the Philadelphia Phillies, aiming to secure the final three wins of their four-game series. In yesterday’s game, Zack Wheeler delivered an impressive performance, throwing an 8-inning shutout with 12 strikeouts, while Craig Kimbrel notched his 401st career save. Now, the Phillies turn to right-hander Dylan Covey, who will make just his second appearance in their uniform. Covey joined the team on May 20 after being claimed on waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his Phillies debut, Covey showcased promise, allowing only one earned run on five hits, one walk, and tallying six strikeouts across 5.0 innings of relief. However, Covey faces an uphill battle tonight as his previous major league experience has been challenging, with a career 6.45 ERA and 1.58 WHIP over 273.1 innings. Despite playing two seasons of professional baseball in China, Covey will have his work cut out for him against the formidable Braves lineup.

The Braves boast one of the most potent lineups in baseball, led by the dynamic Ronald Acuna Jr., who boasts an impressive slash line of .322/.407/.556 and has swiped 22 bases. Considering Covey’s track record, it seems unlikely that he will navigate this lineup unscathed, especially when facing them multiple times. On the other side, Spencer Strider, the current strikeout leader and last season’s runner-up for National League Rookie of the Year, will take the mound for his 11th start. Strider has seamlessly continued his success from last season, sporting a 2.97 ERA and a 2.61 xERA. Remarkably, he has increased his strikeout rate to an astonishing 41.5%, solidifying his status as one of the game’s brightest and youngest pitchers. This pitching matchup heavily favors the Braves. In his four regular-season starts against the Phillies last year, Strider allowed a mere three runs on seven hits, limiting the Phillies’ lineup to a paltry 0.97 batting average. With this in mind, I’m leaning towards backing Atlanta on the run line.

Best MLB Games Total Pick: Under 9 run

Despite the high game total of 9 runs, which is unusual when Spencer Strider is on the mound, it suggests that bookmakers don’t anticipate a strong performance from Dylan Covey, which is reasonable. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Braves come close to covering the run line on their own. However, I’m leaning towards the under because the Phillies can afford to have a short leash on Covey.

Zack Wheeler’s outstanding performance in the previous game could have a significant impact on tonight’s matchup. Firstly, with everyone available in the bullpen, the Phillies have the flexibility to pull Covey early if he encounters trouble. Additionally, the Phillies have an off-day on Monday, so there’s no need to preserve arms in the bullpen. They can go all-in and utilize their bullpen to its fullest extent. While I don’t expect a repeat of the 2-1 finish from yesterday, I also don’t anticipate the Phillies allowing Covey to get heavily scored upon.
