NFL Power Rankings Week 1: Unveiling the 2023 Season’s Standings

|

Welcome to The Bet Club’s eagerly anticipated NFL 2023 season power rankings! As fans, we eagerly devour these rankings, often quick to praise or criticize the writer’s choices. So, here’s your chance to join the conversation as we unveil our NFL Power Rankings for Week 1 of the 2023 season.

Before we dive into the rankings, it’s important to note that we reserve the right to make significant adjustments in the coming weeks as we witness these teams face off on the field for the first time. While last season’s performance does carry weight, we’ve also factored in offseason moves, both positive and negative.

At The Bet Club, we’re all about the odds, so in addition to the rankings, we’ll highlight any discrepancies between our rankings and the Super Bowl betting odds.

One intriguing observation from our initial rankings is that the top 12 teams include only four from the NFC. This may seem unbalanced, but it reflects the current strength disparity between the two conferences. Some NFC teams that would be strong contenders in their conference may struggle just to make the playoffs in the highly competitive AFC.

Before we proceed, don’t forget that you can find detailed NFL predictions for the 2023 season in our comprehensive NFL Betting Guide, along with Futures predictions for all 32 teams. Now, let’s get right into those rankings!

The Bet Club: NFL Power Rankings for Week 1

1. Kansas City Chiefs

To dethrone the champ, you have to deliver a knockout blow, and so far, no one has come close to doing that to the Chiefs. They retain their top spot from last season. The oddsmakers share our sentiment, as they favor the Chiefs at +600 for yet another Super Bowl victory.

2. Philadelphia Eagles

Last year, the Eagles came tantalizingly close to snatching the Lombardi Trophy from their former head coach. They start the season as the de facto kings of the NFC. DraftKings (+650 odds) has the Eagles as strong contenders in the betting, much closer to the Chiefs than FanDuel, where you can back Philly at +800.

3. Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals, who nearly thwarted the Chiefs’ Super Bowl ambitions last season, occupy the third spot on our list. They’ve made noteworthy changes to their offensive line and secondary this year, which led us to place them higher than the oddsmakers, who have the Bills in third place.

4. Buffalo Bills

Bills Mafia shouldn’t be too disappointed with their fourth-place ranking. However, we suspect they might slip in the coming weeks. There’s a lingering feeling that this Buffalo team may have missed its prime opportunity for a Super Bowl win. On a brighter note, safety Damar Hamlin’s return to the field is a significant victory, with odds of -350 for him to win Comeback Player of the Year.

5. San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers discovered that a zero-quarterback strategy isn’t viable when contending for an NFC Championship. Their quarterback situation has been nothing short of tumultuous, including the high-profile trade of Trey Lance to the Cowboys. The silver lining is the potential rise of last year’s Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purdy, who could be their next Tom Brady. If that’s the case, the 49ers could be serious contenders once more.

6. Jacksonville Jaguars

Our sixth-place ranking for the Jaguars might seem generous considering their odds for a Super Bowl win only place them 12th. However, they have a clear path to the playoffs within a relatively soft division. Additionally, the acquisition of Calvin Ridley gives Trevor Lawrence another formidable weapon.

7. New York Jets

We’re believers in the Jets! Regardless of their ultimate record, they promise to be an entertaining team this season. If Garrett Wilson can achieve a 1,000-yard rookie year while catching passes from Zach Wilson, Mike White, Joe Flacco, and Chris Streveler, he might hit 3,000 with Aaron Rodgers at the helm.

8. Miami Dolphins

Surprisingly, three AFC East teams make it into the top 8 of our rankings. Spoiler alert: It will be a while before we discuss the other team. The Dolphins have the potential to become a formidable team this year, but it hinges on Tua Tagovailoa’s ability to stay healthy. A successful season for Miami would also mean more captivating interviews with Mike McDaniel.

9. Cleveland Browns

Doubters often attribute the Browns’ lower rankings to quarterback issues and a shaky kicking situation. However, this summer has brought optimism. Reports suggest that Deshaun Watson can still sling it, and they’ve bolstered their kicking game. The new Browns defensive line has also garnered praise. With three early division games, we’ll soon see their true potential.

10. Dallas Cowboys

America’s team might be slightly overrated in some quarters. However, Tony Pollard’s opportunity to start at running back is a positive development. They are the sixth favorites for the Super Bowl, likely boosted by their position in the NFC, which is perceived as weaker.

11. Baltimore Ravens

One of the most intriguing storylines in the early weeks of the season will be the Ravens’ offensive performance under new coordinator Todd Monken. With Lamar Jackson leading the way, the Ravens hold hopes of making the playoffs.

12. New York Giants

Surprisingly, the Giants find themselves higher on our list than in the sportsbooks’ rankings. DraftKings, for instance, has only eight teams with better odds. Brian Daboll’s group reached the divisional round last season, which warrants some credit as they kick off the year.

13. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have often caused heartache for their fans, and our ranking reflects a degree of caution compared to their Super Bowl odds, which place them just inside the top ten. Justin Herbert is a beacon of hope, but we remain skeptical about their defense and coaching staff.

14. Detroit Lions

Our ranking for the Lions is more tempered than their odds, where they sit as the fourth favorites in the NFC. While they were an entertaining team to watch last season, they allowed over 25 points per game, an area needing improvement.

15. Minnesota Vikings

Kirk Cousins’ popularity has soared thanks to his appearance in the Netflix series “Quarterback.” With enough talent around him, the Vikings hope to make another playoff run. “You like that,” Vikes fans?

16. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers are a wildcard this year, with some observers hyped after their preseason games. Yet, their total wins line of 8.5 suggests Mike Tomlin’s first losing season remains a possibility. Our ranking places them fourth in the AFC

North, but interestingly, four spots higher than anyone in the NFC South. That’s the NFL landscape these days.

17. Green Bay Packers

A new era begins in Green Bay as Jordan Love steps out of Aaron Rodgers’ shadow. We’ve seen glimpses of potential from Love in limited action last year, but it may take time for him and his young receiving corps to fully develop.

18. Denver Broncos

Could Sean Payton’s ban on Gilligan hats on the sideline be the transformative move for this franchise? Probably not, but the Broncos are primed for positive regression in the first season under the former Super Bowl-winning coach.

19. Seattle Seahawks

Geno Smith defied critics with a solid first season as the Seahawks’ starting quarterback. While they are generating buzz in some circles, it’s unlikely they’ll push far beyond the playoff fringes.

20. Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons are stockpiling young talent, including Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. However, we remain cautious about their potential as long as their quarterback, Desmond Ridder, remains unproven.

21. New Orleans Saints

You waited quite a while to see another NFC South team, and now two show up in succession. With new quarterback Derek Carr, an upgrade over Andy Dalton, and promising receiver Chris Olave, the Saints are poised for improvement. However, it may take a year or two for them to become serious contenders once again.

22. Washington Commanders

Similar to the Falcons, the Commanders have the potential to surge in the rankings if their quarterback proves to be the real deal. Sam Howell has a talented group of receivers at his disposal, and it would be a waste if the former Football Team’s defensive strength goes unutilized.

23. Tennessee Titans

This region of the rankings is fitting for a team with an aging quarterback and two young contenders who aren’t quite ready. Derrick Henry remains a force, but he’s been on more talented teams in the past.

24. Chicago Bears

The Bears seem to be gradually improving, albeit still placing last in the NFC North odds (and in these rankings). It would be fantastic to witness Justin Fields take a step forward, particularly with the help of DJ Moore. We may just see that.

25. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs possess a peculiar roster. Half of it reflects their latest Super Bowl-winning team, while the other half includes a bunch of undrafted rookies. Additionally, new quarterback Baker Mayfield is starting for his fourth team since January 2022. While we don’t anticipate a terrible season, they need a couple of years to reload.

26. Las Vegas Raiders

The Raiders provided one of the most memorable moments of last season with Chandler Jones’ walk-off interception return against the Patriots. However, they seem to be treading water at the moment, doing little more than maintaining the status quo.

27. New England Patriots

For those who experienced the Brady-Belichick era, it seems surreal to see the Patriots start this low. Yet, beyond trading on their name, there’s not much working in their favor these days. Sportsbooks also have New England in the bottom 10, and a fourth-place finish in the division appears likely this year.

28. Carolina Panthers

Bryce Young, the overall #1 draft pick, landed in a fortunate position, avoiding the team with the worst record last year. However, the Bears, who did have that dubious honor, are actually ranked higher on this list than the Panthers. Carolina’s offensive line struggled in preseason, so we’ll soon witness Young’s pocket mobility in action.

29. Houston Texans

There’s undeniable fight in this Houston team. Their late-season rally last year cost them the first pick in the draft, but it was a testament to their spirit. Winning two of their last three games might have been an ill-advised move, but Will Anderson and CJ Stroud elevate the team’s talent level. DeMeco Ryans’ squad could be climbing up these rankings as the season progresses.

30. Los Angeles Rams

The Rams’ Super Bowl victory feels like a distant memory. While Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp, and Aaron Donald remain, the roster looks increasingly barren, and there’s much work to be done.

31. Indianapolis Colts

The Colts should brace themselves for growing pains from young quarterback Anthony Richardson this season, along with the fallout from Jonathan Taylor’s contract dispute.

32. Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals appear to have set their sights on securing high draft picks in next season’s draft. Depending on their quarterback situation, it may be wise to keep Kyler Murray out of action. Sportsbooks are in agreement, starting the year with the Cardinals at the bottom of the list.

Disclaimer: These rankings reflect early-season perceptions and may change significantly as the season progresses.
