Best Bet NHL Picks for Today 10-20-23

Best NHL Bet Puck Line Pick: : NJ Devils vs NY Islanders – NJ Devils -1.5 (+215)

Reasoning

After a 7-0 preseason, the New Jersey Devils are finding that things are not as easy in the regular season. They began with a tough victory against Detroit, but followed that with an overtime loss to Arizona and an ugly loss to Florida. However, there some positives to be taken from what happened on Monday. After falling behind 4-0, the Devils did not give up and they ultimately lost 4-3. It would have been a victory if Sergei Bobvrosky hadn’t stood tall in the net. What followed was 3 days off and some intense practices for the Devils. Additionally, we are looking at likely line switches with Timo Meier moving up to play with Jack Hughes.

While the Islanders are 2-0, they won close games 3-2 and 1-0 and their offense has failed to impress just yet. Tonight, they face a motivated New Jersey team that has not played well to this point in the season. Between the line reorganizations, time off and tough practices, the expectation is that we will see a stronger Devils performance from the start. This is a building they are comfortable playing in and the Islanders haven’t shown the offensive firepower to keep up yet.

Devils -1.5 (+215) available at time of publishing. Playable to +130.

Best Bet NHL Picks: CAR Hurricanes vs COL Avalanche Money Line 3-Way Pick COL Avalanche+115

Reasoning

The Carolina Hurricanes are rounding the corner and heading back toward the East Coast after their annual early-season West Coast road trip thanks to the North Carolina State Fair taking over the area near PNC Arena. The Canes have looked a little tired at times on this road trip, allowing five or more goals in three of the first four games on the trip. Nothing is more stunning than the seven goals allowed to the Seattle Kraken, who had scored just three total goals in the first four games. This defensemen corps for Carolina was considered, on paper, the best from top to bottom, but it certainly hasn’t showed. And, the team lost Frederik Andersen to injury in the win in San Jose, although he wasn’t showing out prior to the ailment. But with Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov manning the crease for the short term, things don’t look to get a ton better in terms of stopping the puck.

The Colorado Avalanche have stopped all kinds of pucks. After allowing two goals in Los Angeles in the team’s opener on Oct. 11, the Avalanche have allowed just two goals in the past three games, including Alexandar Georgiev’s shutout of the Chicago Blackhawks last time out on Thursday. He has been on fire to start the season, going a perfect 4-0. The Hurricanes might be able to puncture his GAA and SV% numbers a little bit, but the goaltending advantage is clearly tipped in the home side’s favor here, facing a defensively-challenged team which looks a little tired.

Avalanche -135 at time of publishing. Playable to -150.

Today’s Best NHL Prop Bet Picks

NHL Pick: Nazem Kadri over 0.5 points (-135)

The Flames have what should be a favorable matchup on Friday night against the Blue Jackets. Of course, it is too early in the season to make determinations on several teams. But entering the season and in the first few games of the year, Columbus appears to still be in their rebuild. They are 1-2-0 with a -4 goal differential and have played one playoff team from last year. Calgary has points in 3 out of 4 games, including wins against a couple of playoff hopefuls.

Granted, this is not a game-winner pick. But it helps illustrate that Calgary is better and can run up the score on Friday. That being the case, Nazem Kadri has a good chance to be involved. Kadri has 143 points in his last 2 seasons and is currently centering Calgary’s second line. If the game gets chippy, he is also on the team’s top power play with other star players. He has played 17-20 minutes in each game thus far and should again on Friday. The opportunity will be there for Kadri to be firmly in the mix in a favorable matchup tonight.

NHL Pick: Timo Meier over 0.5 points (+100)

Timo Meier has been quiet to start the season but it is not going to last forever. The Devils are too good and too fast, and Meier plays on too good of a line to not break out at some point soon. Meier is on the team’s second line with Nico Hischier and Ondrej Palat. He is also on the second power play with Hischier, Dawson Mercer, Dougie Hamilton and Alexander Holtz. The opportunity will be there for Meier to get on the score sheet with a point.

Although the Islanders typically flex good goal prevention and have early on this year, Devils-Islanders games were higher scoring last season. In 3 head-to-head games last season, the average game total was 7.00 with 62.66 shots on goal per game and 5 power plays per game. Something about the pure matchup of these teams has led to more offense than defense and goaltending recently. If these teams hold to their trends from last season, this game could bring more offense than anticipated. If that happens, a +100 value for Meier to collect a point has plenty of appeal.

Friday NHL Picks and Parlay 10-20-23

NHL Pick: CAL Flames @ CLB Blue Jackets · Money Line 3-Way CAL Flames Win

Reasoning

The Calgary Flames are set to hit the road and face the Columbus Blue Jackets this Friday in their first encounter of the season. Despite playing a game on the previous night, Calgary has chosen to deploy their starting goaltender, Jacob Markstrom, for this matchup. The Flames exhibited a strong performance in Buffalo, securing a 4-3 victory that advanced their season record to 2-1-1. In contrast, the Blue Jackets stand at 1-2, striving to maintain competitiveness.

While Calgary’s lineup still bears some weaknesses, Jacob Markstrom boasts statistics of a 2.96 goals-against average (GAA) and a .898 save percentage (SV%), which are not particularly impressive. Nevertheless, the Flames possess a robust offensive core and a commendable defense. Their challenge will be to contain the offensive threats posed by Adam Fantilli and Patrik Laine. Elvis Merzlikins is likely to be guarding the net for the Blue Jackets, sporting a 1.23 GAA and an impressive .950 SV% across two games. However, it’s essential not to be deceived by these statistics, as he remains a below-average goaltender susceptible to conceding a considerable number of goals.

Considering that Columbus doesn’t possess a formidable defense, and even though they have the home advantage and a day of rest, the Blue Jackets should be viewed as the underdogs in this matchup. While the game might be closely contested, the Flames are well-equipped to secure a regulation-time victory.

NHL Pick : NJ Devils @ NY Islanders · Puck Line NJ Devils -1.5

Our Analysis
The New Jersey Devils, following a perfect 7-0 preseason, are realizing that the regular season presents greater challenges. They initiated their campaign with a hard-fought victory over Detroit, but subsequent matches saw them fall short in overtime against Arizona and suffer a disheartening loss to Florida. However, there were silver linings to be found in their Monday game. Even after trailing 4-0, the Devils displayed resilience and concluded the match with a 4-3 defeat. If not for Sergei Bobvrosky’s stellar performance in the net, it might have resulted in a victory. Following that encounter, the Devils enjoyed a three-day break and engaged in intensive practice sessions.

Additionally, the Devils are exploring line adjustments, including Timo Meier’s placement alongside Jack Hughes. In contrast, the Islanders, with a 2-0 record, have secured narrow victories of 3-2 and 1-0. Their offensive prowess has yet to make a significant impact. In tonight’s faceoff, they are up against a determined New Jersey team that has encountered challenges early in the season. With line reconfigurations, ample time for recovery, and rigorous training, expectations are high for an improved performance from the Devils right from the outset. Furthermore, the game takes place in a venue where the Devils are comfortable, while the Islanders have yet to demonstrate the offensive firepower required to match their opponents.

The Puck Line favoring the Devils at -1.5 (+215) is available at the time of this publication and remains playable until reaching +130.
