It’s another big day in the world of hockey, so let’s get straight to making your next NHL bet better!

Money Line NHL Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs Win -165

Toronto Maple Leafs @ Washington Capitals

Kicking off a 16-game NHL slate is a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals. This is the first matchup between the two this season, and they begin what should be a great day in the NHL. Two of the league’s best goal scorers in Auston Matthews and Alex Ovechkin will be playing in this game, but each team has somewhat underperformed to start the season. This should be a fun game in the nation’s capital.

The Maple Leafs are the stronger team in this matchup by far, and they should earn the win when this is said and done. If not for a late comeback in their previous game, they would have lost three straight games. This means they should realize they need to step it up quick. That game saw a triumphant 4-3 overtime win after being down 3-1 in the third period, and that performance can be a spark the team needs. I expect to see a much better effort for the full game. Washington has started 1-2-1, so they are not hot either. However, even on home ice, they may be in over their heads against a stacked Maple Leafs roster. Take the Toronto Maple Leafs to earn the road win, getting their team back on track.

Game Totals NHL Pick: Over 6.5 -110

Carolina Hurricanes @ Tampa Bay Lightning

The Hurricanes wrap up a six-game road trip tonight, and Carolina has looked tired at the tail end of this road trip, allowing 13 goals in the past two games in losses in Seattle and Colorado. Hurricanes games have looked like video game hockey so far, with the Canes piling up 28 goals through six games, or 4.7 goals per game, while allowing 30 goals, or 5.0 GPG. It’s no surprise the over has cashed in all six games so far.

For the Lightning, they’re likely still shaking their heads after blowing a 3-1 lead last time out against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at Amalie. The Lightning blew that one 4-3 in OT, and that makes the over 2-0-1 in three home games for the Lightning. This is a team that is trying to stay afloat with a combination of Jonas Johansson and Matt Tomkins in the crease until Andrei Vasilevskiy is healthy enough to return from back surgery. Look for plenty of goals in this battle.

Over 6.5 (-110) at the time of publishing. Playable to -120.

Puck Line NHL Pick: Detroit Red Wings -1.5 +180

Seattle Kraken @ Detroit Red Wings

The Seattle Kraken travel to Detroit to take on the Red Wings for the first time this season. The Kraken are off to a rough start – sporting a 1-4-1 record – and are having a really hard time scoring goals. They are averaging just 1.83 goals per game. It’s the exact opposite for Detroit, who are 5-1 this season and scoring 5 goals per game. On paper, this is a complete mismatch, but there is still a ton of value on the puck line.

Alex DeBrincat leads the NHL in goals and points, and his linemate Dylan Larkin is right there with him. Those two have been unstoppable to start the season, and there’s no chance that Seattle finds a way to contain them on the road. Detroit’s goaltending hasn’t been elite, but the goal support has been more than enough. This game could get out of hand in a hurry if the Kraken don’t find a way to contain the hottest power play in the league, operating at a crisp 39.1%. This game isn’t going to be close, but we won’t get too cute here. There is value backing Detroit -2.5, but the puck line at -1.5 is already so juicy, that we don’t need to stretch this bet. Look for the Red Wings to win this game in a convincing fashion.

Red Wings -1.5 (+180) available at the time of publishing. Playable at that number.

Game Totals NHL Pick: Over 6.5 -115

Edmonton Oilers @ Minnesota Wild

The Oilers have been a hard team to figure, as the offense has been feast or famine. Edmonton has scored three or more goals twice, while going for two or one goal on three different occasions. Defensively, the Oilers have mostly been awful, allowing three or more goals in four of five outings, including eight goals allowed in Vancouver to open the season two weeks ago. What’s more, the Oilers have allowed a total of 16 goals in three games against non-playoff teams from a season ago, the Flyers and Canucks (x 2). That’s awful defense and goaltending in games Edmonton should be ticking off wins.

For the Wild, they’ve been allowing goals at a feverish rate, too. After Filip Gustavsson pitched a shutout against the Florida Panthers in the opener on October 12, Gustavsson and Marc-Andre Fleury have split the past four starts, allowing a total of 21 goals, or 5.3 goals per game (GPG). It’s no surprise that the over has cashed in all four of those outings. Imagine what Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will be able to do against that kind of leaky defense, especially if they can get onto the power play. Last season, these teams cashed the over in two of three meetings, too, with an average of 7.5 goals per game in the two games which went over.

Over 6.5 (-115) at the time of publishing. Playable to -140.

Bruins -1.5 (+140)

NHL Parlay Odds: +927

Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5

NHL Parlay Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5 over Washington Capitals (+140)

This season seems to present a formidable challenge for the Capitals. With a 1-2-1 record through four games and being outscored 15-6, their outlook appears uncertain. Their top scorers have managed just 3 points. In contrast, the Maple Leafs boast five players with 4 or more points and three others with 3 points. Toronto clearly emerges as the deeper, superior team in this matchup. While the Leafs have had a decent start to the season, they should have little trouble handling the Capitals. Notably, the Maple Leafs have dominated the Capitals in recent head-to-head matchups, winning five of the last six encounters. Over that span, Toronto has outscored Washington 26-17, with an average score of 4.33-2.83. This contest seems poised to be one of the most one-sided matchups between these teams in recent years, making the +140 odds highly appealing.

NHL Parlay Pick: Buffalo Sabres vs. Ottawa Senators Over 7 (+100)

The Sabres and Senators are two teams known for both scoring and conceding goals in abundance. Last season, the Sabres ranked third in the NHL in goals scored and seventh in goals allowed. With much of last year’s roster intact, they are expected to be among the league’s more productive teams this year. On the other side, the Senators have averaged 4.2 goals per game early in the 2023-24 season, ranking them tied for third in the league. Both teams have demonstrated potent goal-scoring capabilities and have allowed an average of three goals per game thus far. This combination of strong offense and somewhat porous defense sets the stage for a high-scoring affair. Notably, the Senators have yet to play a game with a total of fewer than 7 goals, and the odds make this Over 7 bet even more enticing.

NHL Parlay Pick: Boston Bruins -1.5 over Chicago Blackhawks (+114)

The Bruins and Blackhawks have already met this season, with Boston emerging victorious in a 3-1 win. The Bruins appear to have continued their strong form from the previous regular season, currently holding a perfect 5-0-0 record. They have secured wins by a margin of 2 or more goals in four out of five games, highlighting their dominance. In this matchup, the Bruins clearly stand as the stronger team, with a significant advantage. There’s a good chance they’ll run up the score against a weaker Chicago team. The Blackhawks, while demonstrating determination, hold a 2-4-0 record and have recently lost Taylor Hall to injury. Chicago’s losses have come by a combined margin of 9 goals, averaging a 2.25-goal deficit per game. In recent seasons, when Chicago loses, it tends to be by a substantial margin, and Tuesday’s game seems likely to follow this trend.
